New Toys

So there are lots of things I could have spent the money I got from selling the prizes from the outside bozeman photo contest (credit card debt, my car) but what fun would that be? I figured I should probably just reinvest it in camera gear, so here's what I picked up today.

It's fun spending more money then you make in a month all at once. . .

I feel like a sellout for posting something involving outside bozeman on inside bozeman. And I'm ok with that.

Procrastinator compilation again

Here are pictures from the last couple weeks, pretty much all biking. The first is from American Fork, up behind where I work. This is how you get to the main Timpanoogas trailheads. There are some of the best trails I have found in the area up here. You have to share with dirt bikes and horses but I only saw one group of each in 2 days of riding.

7-15-08 american fork

These include a couple rides, the first about 10min up I-80 (when there is no traffic). The trail climbs to the ridge and then follows is for miles around the top of a drainage before becoming horribly overgrown and dropping back down. The others are from the Uinta Mountains that are about 45 min to the east of here. The area is really cool with a paved highway going over 10k feet but most trails are closed to bikes and the couple trails they forgot to include are horribly rocky. This would be a great place to ski, it gets plowed out in the spring.

They wrote a great article about their protest that probably won't help their cause.

Check it out at New West:

It was late when we left Missoula on a Friday night. We planned to sleep at the trailhead, wake early, hike in six miles, stay overnight, and fish and walk out seven miles the next day. We stopped to fill up our gas tanks in Dillon, where an article in the local paper caught our eye. We weren’t going to be alone in the Lima Peaks. A group of mountain bikers, the Montana Mountain Bike Alliance, planned to ride in the Garfield Mountain area in order to protest the pending wilderness recommendation. We weren’t happy about having to share the trails with the group, and, moreover, we weren’t happy about the intent behind their ride. We soon took matters into our own hands, laughing and tearing up a cardboard box. We were going to have a protest of our own.

The comments are REALLY good

I love how pretentious city yuppies move to places like Missoula and then try to tell Missoula residents how they should live, where they should recreate, how they should recreate.

"Oh those mountain bikers -- they tried to KILL US with their high-speed fun! We were just walking along, 6-across on the trail, having a pleasant conversation about what a miracle Barack Obama is, and here comes this CRAZY mountain bike rider going at least 3 miles per hour! He tried to KILL US! We actually had to interrupt our impressively deep and sophisticated political conversation! CLEARLY mountain bikes should be banned!"

WTF?

Who are these people and why do they feel so strongly that they drove from Missoula to Lima to protest a bunch of good natured people who just want to ride bikes? It makes me angry just seeing the picture. . . and I'm not an angry guy.

Here's a picture from the Italian Peaks. This is one of the trails that the protesters are afraid mountain bikers are going to ruin just by being there.

If you haven't already, email here: r1_gallatin_comments@fs.fed.us with the subject Biking on the CDT. Tell them that there is no reason that bikes shouldn't be allowed to access the remote trails in the Lionhead, Italian Peaks and Lima Peaks area. The Sheep Lake Trail #218 is up there with the best trails in the state. The views on the Deadmans creek to Nicholia creek trail are some of the best I've ever seen in Montana. July 8

A controversial process of extracting otherwise-secret information from a friend or co-worker by getting them drunk and thereby loosening their control on their tongue.

The guys at work took me out drinking last night. After quite a few beers and a lot of questions I finally let slip that I was going to be a father. What can I say? Beerboarding should be against the law.

It's only fair

Supreme Court slashes Exxon's punitive damages for Valdez oil spill

ExxonMobil is off the hook for billions in punitive damages related to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. In 1994, the oil giant was ordered to pay $5 billion in punitive damages. In 2006, that amount was cut to $2.5 billion. Last week, the Supreme Court slashed the amount once again, to $507.5 million. By a 5-3 vote (Exxon stockholder Samuel Alito sat out), the court reasoned that punitive damages should not exceed what the company paid to victims for economic losses. Since the accident, Exxon has paid $3.4 billion in various fines, penalties, cleanup costs, claims, and other expenses. The $507.5 million will be divvied up among 32,677 commercial fisherfolk, seafood processors, landowners, native Alaskans, and small business owners. Exxon, which posted a record-breaking annual profit of $40.6 billion in February, makes $507.5 million in approximately 12 hours of sales.

Mmmmm..... rock piles

Went and rode lifts today at deer valley. One of the trails there is the course for a professional downhill event. We rode the trail except for 3 places where the trail for mere mortals takes an easier route around the race track. The rest of the trail was ridable and fun with a few terrifying moments. (I made no attempt at the following depicted sections of so-called trail)

15 foot cliff you ride down or jump over...

8ish foot mandatory air (jump from where the guy is standing)...

and a gully full of rocks and logs.

And thank god for body armor, tumbling down rock piles has way fewer consequences. Especially when you are kind of wuss and don't like things that hurt.

Vote for Pedro

Or vote for John

I'm a Hellride semifinalist.

This year, applicants will be narrowed down to a field of about 32, who will then be voted by the internet public down to a final 8 (4 men, 4 women), who will then be invited to Downieville. They will then compete against each other, as well as Hellriders Weir and Lloyd, in a series of feats of strength (think "American Gladiators" meets "Jackass") to gain hopeful time bonuses for the following day's Hellride.

The Hellride itself will take in somewhere between 65 and 75 miles of prime high country riding, mostly singletrack, with anywhere between 12,500 and 15,000 feet of climbing. The contestants will race each other, as well as the pursuing wheels of Weir and Lloyd, in battle where attrition and willpower will feature as strongly as fitness and bike handling ability, in the hopes of inning a brand new Nomad, kitted out with SRAM and RockShox finest, valued at more than $5,500.

Attrition? I'm up for quite a flogging for a $5,500 bike. . . .

Once-Great Competitive Eater Reduced To Hustling At 10-Cent Wing Nights

June 7, 2008 | Issue 44•23

BUFFALO, NY—It's 1:30 a.m. Chris Rierden breathes a beleaguered sigh as he counts a large wad of singles next to the dumpsters behind a local Hooters. Though you wouldn't know it to look at the haggard, sauce-covered 32-year-old, Rierden—who currently ekes out a living hustling unsuspecting locals in impromptu low-stakes chicken-wing-eating contests—was at one time the most promising competitive eater on the professional circuit.

But with one bad decision, that once-bright future went dark forever. Gone is the $85,000 home outside of Akron. Gone is the ESPN2 guest-commentator spot. Gone are the mid-range American cars, the weekend miniature-golf outings, and the decent-looking women.

Chris Rierden threw it all away.

Wear a helmet!

So, as Marshall can tell you, riding a road bike between bars is dangerous. Having the temerity that I do I disregarded this fact. I was riding down fifth street towards college. I was standing up and pedaling hard in 52x18 when I hit one of the 2"x6"x2" holes in the pavement that are so prevalent in this town and the next thing I knew I was sliding down the road. I slid long enough that I had time to think to myself "wow, I'm sliding down the pavement pretty fast on my chest".

Normally I wear a helmet on my road bike at all times, but the morning of the incident I couldn't find it and rather then search I left without it. When I endoed on the crack in the road my bike flipped around and the spiked platform pedal hit me in the back of the head. It left a 1/4" wound that bled like crazy for about 2 minutes before I stopped it with my glove.

damage:
Halfway shredded jacket, jeans, gloves, headphones, mp3 player and sunglasses.
1/2" long hole in my left palm and a small scrape on my left hip.
1/4" laceration on my head.

One of the hoods on the bars was bent from the impact, but went back into place without a problem.

All in all, I was pretty lucky, I was probably going between 20 and 30 mph when it happened and I slid around 10-15 feet on the pavement. My clothing did a good job of protecting me from the road at it's own expense.

I had had 3 pints of bud light in the 2 hours before hand so I wasn't really drunk. I had a headlight but the didn't see the hole at all before I hit it, probably because I was looking up ahead at the intersection of college and fifth.

Great Salt Lake actually really salty

So the salt lake is really salty, approximately 4x that of the ocean. Bennett got himself a hobie 18 over the weekend and we took it out sunday. Dead wind turned into the great white squall complete with the harbor patrol boat following us in.

Whatever night shift schedule, guess I'll be going to bed early tonight.

Fun with Everclear!

People were falling asleep around the campfire due to a late night the night before. Morale was low. There was a bottle of everclear that my other Utard friend James brought and a raging fire. Something needed to be done.

Fire is fun. I'm glad I didn't set my polyester shirt on fire.

Why is it that I'm the only one posting here any more? Do the rest of you have real lives that you are busy with or what?

Gas Holidy

stolen from here

"It sounds like a great plan. With the high cost of gas, let's roll back the federal gas tax for everyone over the summer to give drivers a break during the busiest travel season. McCain first proposed this plan and suggests that "Hard-working American families are suffering from higher gasoline prices. John McCain calls on Congress to suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day." After Obama came out against the plan, Hillary Clinton NOW supports it."

"On top of that, reducing the cost of gas will likely increase demand. Increasing demand will likely tighten supply. Tightening the supply will cause the price to increase somewhat thus taking back some of the $50 in tax benefits and giving them to big oil.

Finally, doing this also will cost the US treasury about $10billion dollars in money that is badly needed to maintain our highway system (remember that bridge that collapsed?)."

Sounds great. I should drive more to take advantage of it.
