From the archives

I got a new computer with a bunch of hard drive space, so I'm copying my archived pictures from way back onto it. I'll have more when it's finished, way more dating back to 2001..

Sorry Nate, but that car sucked wicked bad..

Another pretty good beer drinking location

The combination of the altitude and the 9% beer worked out quite well. It's not quite on par witht the trapeze, but I thought it was pretty fun..

Was the atmopheric pressure during the age of the dinosaurs 3-5 times what it is today...

Nerd alert: Yes nerdy but very interesting and a quick read. Saw him present this at a conference a couple years back.

Major points as to why it is not the 1 bar we have today:

Giant flying dinosaurs couldn't have enough power to fly. Counter explanations explain that they were not flyers but gliders walking to the top of cliffs and soaring down.

How could a huge long necked dinosaur pump blood to its brain?
Counter explanations are funny including multiple hearts, always holding their necks horizontal to the ground, or hearts located not in the chest but the neck.

He goes through calculations and all can be adjusted by changing the pressure. Interesting thoughts.

optimum beer drinking location study

Through much data collection and field trials I have determined that one of the many optimum locations for consuming beer is on a Hobie trapeze.
For a bonus point, or a beer, what point of sail is the boat on in the above picture?

Mountains, fuck they got some pretty good ones here.

Dark holes,mmmmmmmm

All right, who's ready for some caving? (picture Liz jumping up and down with her hand in the air screaming "me, me, oh, pick me) The first cave is up Darby Canyon north of Driggs, ID. It is called the Darby Canyon Wind Cave and actually connects to an ice cave higher up, you can see both caves on a topo map. The other is a lava tube that could be up to a 6000ft round trip. It is called the Civil Defense Cave and is north of Rexburg, ID. Looks like the weekend of Sept. 27 might be the canidate for the trip. Probably go something like meet someplace in Idaho late Friday night with drinking untill Sunday with some caving interspaced in there.

New Toys

So there are lots of things I could have spent the money I got from selling the prizes from the outside bozeman photo contest (credit card debt, my car) but what fun would that be? I figured I should probably just reinvest it in camera gear, so here's what I picked up today.

It's fun spending more money then you make in a month all at once. . .

I feel like a sellout for posting something involving outside bozeman on inside bozeman. And I'm ok with that.

Procrastinator compilation again

Here are pictures from the last couple weeks, pretty much all biking. The first is from American Fork, up behind where I work. This is how you get to the main Timpanoogas trailheads. There are some of the best trails I have found in the area up here. You have to share with dirt bikes and horses but I only saw one group of each in 2 days of riding.

7-15-08 american fork

These include a couple rides, the first about 10min up I-80 (when there is no traffic). The trail climbs to the ridge and then follows is for miles around the top of a drainage before becoming horribly overgrown and dropping back down. The others are from the Uinta Mountains that are about 45 min to the east of here. The area is really cool with a paved highway going over 10k feet but most trails are closed to bikes and the couple trails they forgot to include are horribly rocky. This would be a great place to ski, it gets plowed out in the spring.

They wrote a great article about their protest that probably won't help their cause.

Check it out at New West:

It was late when we left Missoula on a Friday night. We planned to sleep at the trailhead, wake early, hike in six miles, stay overnight, and fish and walk out seven miles the next day. We stopped to fill up our gas tanks in Dillon, where an article in the local paper caught our eye. We weren’t going to be alone in the Lima Peaks. A group of mountain bikers, the Montana Mountain Bike Alliance, planned to ride in the Garfield Mountain area in order to protest the pending wilderness recommendation. We weren’t happy about having to share the trails with the group, and, moreover, we weren’t happy about the intent behind their ride. We soon took matters into our own hands, laughing and tearing up a cardboard box. We were going to have a protest of our own.

The comments are REALLY good

I love how pretentious city yuppies move to places like Missoula and then try to tell Missoula residents how they should live, where they should recreate, how they should recreate.

"Oh those mountain bikers -- they tried to KILL US with their high-speed fun! We were just walking along, 6-across on the trail, having a pleasant conversation about what a miracle Barack Obama is, and here comes this CRAZY mountain bike rider going at least 3 miles per hour! He tried to KILL US! We actually had to interrupt our impressively deep and sophisticated political conversation! CLEARLY mountain bikes should be banned!"

WTF?

Who are these people and why do they feel so strongly that they drove from Missoula to Lima to protest a bunch of good natured people who just want to ride bikes? It makes me angry just seeing the picture. . . and I'm not an angry guy.

Here's a picture from the Italian Peaks. This is one of the trails that the protesters are afraid mountain bikers are going to ruin just by being there.

If you haven't already, email here: r1_gallatin_comments@fs.fed.us with the subject Biking on the CDT. Tell them that there is no reason that bikes shouldn't be allowed to access the remote trails in the Lionhead, Italian Peaks and Lima Peaks area. The Sheep Lake Trail #218 is up there with the best trails in the state. The views on the Deadmans creek to Nicholia creek trail are some of the best I've ever seen in Montana. The guys at work took me out drinking last night. After quite a few beers and a lot of questions I finally let slip that I was going to be a father. What can I say? Beerboarding should be against the law.

It's only fair

Supreme Court slashes Exxon's punitive damages for Valdez oil spill

ExxonMobil is off the hook for billions in punitive damages related to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. In 1994, the oil giant was ordered to pay $5 billion in punitive damages. In 2006, that amount was cut to $2.5 billion. Last week, the Supreme Court slashed the amount once again, to $507.5 million. By a 5-3 vote (Exxon stockholder Samuel Alito sat out), the court reasoned that punitive damages should not exceed what the company paid to victims for economic losses. Since the accident, Exxon has paid $3.4 billion in various fines, penalties, cleanup costs, claims, and other expenses. The $507.5 million will be divvied up among 32,677 commercial fisherfolk, seafood processors, landowners, native Alaskans, and small business owners. Exxon, which posted a record-breaking annual profit of $40.6 billion in February, makes $507.5 million in approximately 12 hours of sales.
