Stole this from Tyler Land

Hoping to get a little input on this one, I have the same questions..

I am torn between a choice of life and career. On one hand I have been given the opportunity to have a career with no end in sight. I must however make sacrifies to obtain this position professionally. Am I to give up my lifestyle and the time that I have for the people that I love and care about for a career? Or do I make the choice of a happier but easier life? This is a hard decision that may just be made randomly by me some friday night.

huh, happier and easier doesn't sound so bad. In my opinion lifestyle is much more important than career. I have seen what happens to engineers that take that route. The chief at the small firm i worked for last was a prime example. He works his ass off 60 hours a week every week. Hasn't taken a vacation for 6 years. His kids have all kinds of issues, likely in part from their lack of a father.

Mike stebbins is kicking ass at boeing, but hates it. They expect 50 plus hours a week from everyone. He says he doesn't have time for much of anything else. He is all stressed out and doesn't get enough sleep. He is quitting next year and doing something else.

The french have one thing right, everyone values quality of life and leisure over work. They all seem to be happy and fit, unlike a lot of the people here.

my 2 cents

Ahh, the big question.. I'm still trying to figure that out myself. I was given the opportunity of a career last summer at JPL, but passed it up. There are still times when I regret that, but most of the time I am happy with the decision. Even if I did work there, I don't think I could of stayed very long. I would of taken Mike Stebbins' approach I think.

On the east coast, alot of people are much more concerned with money than they are in MT. I meet people every day that are aghast when they ask me where I'm going to work after school and I say "I don't know, I might not" They don't even consider doing what they want instead of what society says they are supposed to do.. I have a friend Kirk, who has the same open ended idea of the future as I do, and he is facing constant critisizm and pressure by his dad, Dr. Round.

I guess we should consider ourselves lucky to have such flexibility in our future. Kirk needs to go to Bozeman and never look back.

I'm not sure what I want, but it's definitely not a high pressure, high paying job over here. Other grad students are talking about how all they did engineering for was for more money. Thats crap, how can you ever be happy then? I went to grad school to improve my chances of getting the fun, lower pressure, lower paying job where I want it. And then spend all my money on fun away from work..

Ok, now for class

a guess that's about 3 cents for me

so, it took the internet for us to confess our inner thoughts to each other and truly bond. just kidding, im definately deeply struggling in this delima, and im pretty sure i have the solution.
I think this is why religion is called the peoples opiate, if you have faith you dont need to question these things, god is in control, obviously. so if we just accept jesus as our savior we can just mull through life 9-5 for the rest of our lives and be moderately happy!!!!!
